Excel Programming Resources
It seems like this site is getting more traffic from Excel programmers (and Excel programmer wanna-bes (like me)) than anything else. If you are into this kind of thing, the following resources may be of use to you:
Books
- Walkenbach's Power Programming for Excel is the first programming book I really worked through (though I used the 2000 Edition). Also available in the 2007 Edition. Which edition should you get? Probably whatever version you're running -- between 2000 and 2003 it didn't make enough difference for me to want to upgrade. It is a good guide for getting started.
- Green et al.'s Professional Excel Development is a big step up from Walkenbach, in terms of programming sophistication. The style is very different, the assumed level of knowledge is much higher, and if you are a muddle along programmer like me, this book will occasionally put you to shame. Woe to those who do not use "option explicit"! But a great book nonetheless.
Software
In case you haven't heard, Excel 2007 is now available. If you've felt that each version of Excel from 97 to 2003 was more or less equal, well, prepare for something new!
Websites
- Bartlomiej Dzik's site is the best other site I know of for people who think Excel should be used for games.
- NEKO to Excel is another website with Excel games by Kouichi Tani
- Ozgrid has a good Excel VBA help forum, though you should be warned they are very uptight about following the rules when you ask a question. Don't piggyback on someone else's thread!
- Mr. Excel's Forum is better for more basic Excel questions, if you have more basic Excel questions. As in, not so much for programmers.
